WDT: Regulators Hold Hearings Before Doing Whatever They Damn Well Please

A geographical split or an overlay ?  For decades residents of the Syracuse-Watertown-Utica area have shared the 315 area code and now the Public Service Commission is once again declaring we are running out of available phone numbers because these days there are so many cell phones and direct dial systems in businesses.     In theory a seven digit phone number produces ten million combinations.      New York State originally had seven area codes and now has 15. Remember the good old days when all of New York City was 212 ?     The geographic split is best, if you are in the portion that keeps 315. That would likely be Syracuse. An overlay means we all are dialing ten digits for everything. No big deal for numbers loaded in memory of the device but a bit of a pain otherwise.    Also such a system means they cease to be "area" codes, but just longer phone numbers.     I don't know if we are really running out as they have been crying wolf for years  and you know what ?  Maybe we just say you can't have a number until a new one opens up.     I cancelled my home phone last year, so that one is available.     If they are going to do it, I would take the split even if we get a new prefix. Rochester did that and they survived.  In that deal, it was Buffalo that got to keep 716, so you know what would happen here.Watertown Daily Times | PSC gathers public input on 315 area code plan in Watertown
